October 2012 Newsletter

Hello TALI!

Needless to say, the primary focus now until November 6 is the elections. It is imperative that we do everything possible to get out the vote for the following:

TIM BISHOP-Congressional District 1

RICARDO MONTANO-Senatorial District 4

We need a face-to-face push for these two seats.

`Tim has always been supportive of our issues and he is in need of our help.

`Ricardo is on the ballot primarily because of the efforts of Ron Smith and our members so we need to show our strength further and get him elected.

In addition, some locals have decided to offer support to Ryan Cronin in Senatorial District 6 who is running against Kemp Hannon. There was a great deal of discussion at the endorsement conference but NYSUT ultimately chose not to endorse anyone; however, Kemp Hannon has not supported us for some time and local leaders view Ryan Cronin as a viable opponent who could be a great ally to public education.

Suggestions to get the correct vote out:

  1. Push for 100% PTA/SEPTA Membership
  2. Community Coalition: Have you picked an organization to support in your community? (ask members who live locally if they belong to an organization that you could “adopt”)
  3. In-District Coalitions: Have you reached out to other union presidents in your District?
  4. Have a representative from your local join the TALI steering committee for lunch at Gurneys this month and let Frank know (
  5. In January at the Crest Hollow, there is a Political Action Workshop H that would be beneficial for TALI members to attend. We recommend sending no more than ONE person from your local to this workshop.

Monthly Solidarity Message:

Reverend Cletus Kiley delivers the invocation to the 2011 Building Trades National Legislative Conference. It is a powerful video which is sure to get people talking.
